The extension and lateral conversion to combine a pair of unassuming 1950's terraced houses in South London. The project consists of three main moves to unlock and reconfigure the cellular layout of the existing houses. A new painted steel stair opening on to an enlarged first floor landing, a full width rear extension linking both properties across the rear and a first floor extension cantilevering over the side passage to exploit the extra width.
The ground floor extension is punctuated by a series rooflights, sized and orientated to capture sunlight at different times of the day. The expansive south facing glazing is shielded by a projecting corten overhang. Throughout careful consideration was given to the choice of materials and directness of detailing to ensure the new interventions sit harmoniously with the existing fabric.
The design was a collaboration with and for designer Luke Pearson.
