Oakenden
, Kent, 2024A crafted contemporary extension to a small 16th century Grade II Listed oak framed barn in the High Weald AONB in Kent.
The appearance and form have been carefully tuned to respect the original building but with a refinement to the detailing and selection of materials to allow the historic development of the building to remain clearly legible.
The extension reflects the agricultural aesthetic with a simple extruded massing expressed without extraneous details and connected with an inset glazed link to retain the form and integrity of the original building.
Internally an exposed oak frame echoes that of the main barn, whilst externally Corten steel sheets clad the roof and oversail the eaves to provide a crisp contemporary abstraction of the adjacent planes of burnt umber clay tiles.
